Creative Book Reports |
This unit includes five book report assignments. I have used each of these in my classroom many times. These are creative assignments that will engage your students in their reading. |

Book Report #1 |
Biography Book Report
Summary: After reading a biography students will respond to the book with three related assignments.
Objectives:
1. Students will create a time line using important events in their character’s life.
2. Students will write a news article about an interesting event in their character’s life.
3. Students will create a character web over their character’s personality traits.

Procedure:
1. Activate student’s prior knowledge of time lines and sequence.
2. Review News Story with students.
3. Reintroduce character traits and the importance of supporting the given traits.
4. Students will need instruction on using www.kidspiration.com . The given example was produced using this website. You may choose to use another method of making the character web.
5. Assign book report. Students should be reminded to choose a biography of your specified length.
Modifications:
1. Students may need longer time to complete assignment.
2. You may choose to eliminate a part of the assignment to accommodate your students.

Book Report #2 |
Fiction: Book Jacket
Summary: After reading a fiction book students will produce a book jacket. This will require that the students have read and understood their book.
Objectives:
1. Students will write a complete summary of their book report book
2. Students will create a character sketch of the main character in their book.
3. Students will persuade others to read the book.

Assessment:
Assess student’s book jacket using the provided grade sheet.
Materials:
1. library book
2. construction paper
3. computer
4. printer
Procedure:
1. Assign students to read a fiction book of your desired length.
2. After reading review summary, characterization and persuasion with the students.
3. Students will create a book jacket by following the provided instructions.
Modifications:
1. Allow extended time for students as needed.
2. Allow students to read shorter books if necessary.

Non-Fiction: Scrap Book
Summary:
After reading a non-fiction book students will crate a scrap book on the topic they read about.
Objectives:
1. Students will read and understand a non-fiction book.
2. Students will compile the information to create a scrapbook.

3. Students will create a unique scrapbook by following the provided instructions.

1. Allow extended time for students if necessary.
2. Provide books on tape if appropriate.
3. Guide students in finding information for scrapbook.

Book Report #4 |
Fiction: Butterfly Mobile
Summary: After reading a fiction book, students will make a butterfly mobile. The students will be required to pay attention to the characters in the book and how they change as the story progresses.
Objectives:
1. Students will read and understand a fiction book.
2. Students will understand the importance in recognizing character traits and how the change.

3. Assign Butterfly Mobile
4. Students will create a colorful mobile following the provided instructions.

1. Allow extended time for students if necessary.
2. Provide cut out butterflies for students to use as needed.

Fiction: Photo Album
Summary:
After reading a fiction book, students will create a photo album. The students will show understanding of the events and characters in the book.
