| Welcome to the First Grade! |
 First grade brings a year of amazing academic change into a child's life. The greatest amount of knowledge is acquired during the first grade school year. Children begin the year with readiness skills and end the year with fluent reading, writing, language, spelling, and math skills.
They will be introduced to the basics of their future studies in social studies, science, and health. They will further their abilities in music, art, and physical education. They will grow both mentally and socially. First graders are a great group to teach. They are eager and ready to learn and to try new things. |

Tips for Home and School Work |
 Check your child's homework folder every afternoon. Be sure the folder is in the backpack each morning.
Reading - Read to your child 15 to 30 minutes daily; before long your child will be reading to you. Students should read stories and vocabulary words as they are sent home.
Spelling - Study spelling words. Tests are given each Friday.
Phonics - Phonics homework lessons are sent on Monday through Thursday. Each lesson is to be completed, initialed by a parent, and returned to school the next morning in the homework folder.
Math - Study addition and subtraction facts. Practice telling time and counting change.
All subjects - Go over papers with your child, read any comments, and discuss the mistakes that were made and how to correct them. If there were numerous errors, extra practice may be needed at home. Watch for any papers stamped "homework," "correct and return," or "parent
signature.” These should be returned the next day. Parent letters will be sent to let you know about the current area of study in the different subjects.
Get to know your child's teacher and stay in touch. Know what is expected and help your child to learn to be responsible for his/her classwork and homework. Encourage your child to work hard and to behave appropriately at school each day. |
